Police in Bartlesville, Oklahoma are on the look out for a Ms. Jeanna Marie French. In February French allegedly ran over her boyfriend with a Honda motorcycle following a verbal altercation in their home. She is being charged with failure to give information and to render aid in a hit and run situation.

A police officer found Frenchs boyfriend lying beside the road near an intersection. The young man was found screaming in pain and holding his left ankle. According to the police, the injured man claims to have been arguing with French before leaving on foot to avoid a physical altercation. He then claims she came after him with the motorcycle, struck him on the left side of his body and ran over his left ankle before losing control of the motorcycle in the grass and overturning it. He then claims she righted the bike and rode away. When police found French, she claimed the bike fell over but at no time did she or the Honda touch the victim.

This is strangely not the only time French has been accused of injuring her significant other with a moving vehicle. According to court records, in November of this year French was accused of putting another mans truck into reverse, backing the vehicle over his leg. Here at Barons Custom and LA Choppers, we like a challenge. When our tech Chucky ran across a 2007 low mileage, late model Vulcan 900 Classic, he decided this would be an example of what we can do. Be warned. A recent spike in Club violence has police and security on alert.

Jeffery Jethro Pettigrew, 51, the charismatic leader of the Hells Angels San Jose Chapter, was gunned down during a shootout at the John Ascuagas Nugget Casino late Friday evening. Also injured in the incident were two Vagos Motorcycle Club Members; Leonard Ramirez, 45 and Diego Garcia, 28. The incident occurred during the Street Vibrations Biker festival in Sparks, Nevada. The violence is said to have sparked during interactions between the Hells Angels and the Vagos Motorcycle Club of California on the casino floor. Hotel guest and gamblers dove under tables and behind gaming booths to escape the gunfire.

A drive-by shooting early Saturday has no far not been linked conclusively to the shoot out in the Casino, but the combination of incidents did cause the mayor to put Sparks in a State of Emergency.

Police in California and Nevada are bracing for possible retaliation against the Vagos in the coming weeks. The Hells Angels are not known for letting aggressive acts against them rest, and the Vagos seem to be forming a name for themselves with seemingly constant new stories about their less than positive activities. Keep an eye open and if youre attending rallies in California or Nevada, expect more security than last year.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=72 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=72 Mon, 26 Sep 2011 06:24:42 +0000 Winter is Coming...Prepare your Bike - Tori I.

It pains me to say this, but yet again the calendar is pointing towards Winter for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.

If you live in a warmer climate (Southern California, for example) this concept may be lost on you. If you live in a place that actually has weather, you have two options: Store your bike the right way, or end up calling your dealer in spring when the bike refuses to run or has rusted within an inch of its life.

Some bike dealers offer a storage program for the winter. These programs often include a preparation and storage package, so that when spring comes back your bike is ready to ride. If you dont have the funds for this type of storage, or would prefer to keep your bike closer to home, here are some helpful tips to ensure that your bike is running and ready to ride come spring.

Get an Oil Change
New oil is a great idea before you put your bike away for a while. The acidic byproducts produced from the combustion process from previous rides can harm the inner metal surfaces if left to long. Rather than risk the inside of your bike going bad, change the oil. To drain the oil faster and more extensively, warm your engine to its normal operating temperature. Make sure the oil is motorcycle grade. After youve changed the oil, run the bike for a few minutes to make sure the new oil makes its way around the engine. Recycle your used oil. Often the store you bought new oil from will take the old oil back free so that it can be recycled.

Purge your Carbs
No, this isnt some sort of throw back to the South Beach or Atkins diet; purge the carb or carbs for storage. Add gasoline stabilizers to your tank. For bikes that are EFI, you will only need to add fuel stabilizer and run the bike for a few minutes to get the untreated fuel out of the fuel lines. This stabilizer will help reduce condensation in your fuel tank, thus helping to prevent your fuel tank rusting from the inside.

Scrub it Clean and Wax it Down
Clean off your bike. Wash it well. Clean all the junk, dust and bugs off of the windshield and the surface of the tank. While bug guts alone tend to drive to a hard sticky surface that is already annoyingly difficult to remove, prolonged exposure to the acidic chemicals that make up some insects internals can cause damage to the paint or damage your windshield. Make sure to use a motorcycle windshield cleaner.

On the painted areas and the frame, make sure that you apply a coat of wax to provide a protective barrier for storage. While it may seem counter intuitive to wax and polish your bike before you hide it for months, the wax helps prevent the breakdown and corrosion of your bikes paint job. We all know how expensive a repainting job can be. Are there dings or scratches in the paint on your bike? Fix them so that the raw metal doesnt corrode.

Take care of your chrome. Dont use ammonia based products! Use a good chrome polish to help put a protective layer over your chrome for the season.

Lube Up Your Moving Parts
Use lube on your cables and moving parts. Make sure to use lubricants designed for these parts. This is important for cables. Some motorcyclists will also use a fogging oil spray in their bikes cylinders and intake to prevent possible corrosion there.

If you have a chain drive, make sure to lube the chain with lightweight grease or chain lube.

Take care of your leather/vinyl
Clean your leather riding gear and coat it with leather conditioner before you store it away. Clean vinyl with a proper vinyl cleaner and use a protector as well. In either case, make sure to buff the material with a soft cloth when the chemicals are dry.

Issues of Battery
Taking out the battery is a good idea. Your motorcycle will often have a little bit of a current drain, even after the ignition is shut off. Clean the terminals. With conventional batteries, check the electrolyte level and add distilled water to any of the cells that appear low. Elevate the battery to keep it from freezing. We recommend investing in a battery tender in order to keep your battery in good working order.

Exhaust Pipes
You leave them open and things are bound to crawl inside and make a nest. Stuff a clean cloth in the end of your pipe and cover the end with a plastic bag attached with a rubber band. It may look silly, but you wont have a variety of spiders living in their come the return of the sunshine.

Tires
Inflate both your tires with the maximum recommended pressure. Cold air condenses, so keeping your tires fully inflated will help keep them in good shape. If your storage room floor is cement, youre going to want to place cardboard or wood under each tire to keep away the rubber from the freezing temperatures of the floor.

Cover Your Ride
You will want to keep your bike out of sunlight as ultraviolet light can cause painted or plastic portions of the bike fade. Also, direct sunlight in a storage area can increase moisture condensation. This moisture can find its way onto your bike if uncovered. While some people recommend covering your bike with a clean sheet, this will only keep dust off your bike, not moisture. Moisture can lead to mildew building up on the sheet and the material of your motorcycle seat. Using a tarp will keep the dust out as well, but if moisture finds its way under the tarp, it will be trapped there. A specially designed motorcycle cover is probably your best bet. They are designed to be mildew resistant and yet porous enough so that the fabric can breathe and allow moisture to not be trapped.

Taking Your Bike Out Of Storage
So what do you do when it's time to ride again? Here is a simple checklist to follow.

Reinstall the battery
Recheck all your fluid levels
Check for cracked tires, broken parts, leaking oil, small animals
Re-inflate your tires to their recommended pressure
Be careful; it may have been a while since youve ridden and you need to get back in the swing of things

We hope your Winter is a pleasant one. Due to a new transportation policy from the school, students who ride motorcycles had to pay $160 a year for a 12 month permit. However, the permit is only valid at one of the two centers; students had to choose between the downtown campus of WVU or their Evansdale campus, but could not use the expensive permit at both.

Riding students were outraged. Many commented that having to pay for two permits was outrageous, especially because they participate in alternative transportation; something the university encourages. Another chief concern was the fact that in West Virginia motorcycle riding is not something that happens all twelve months of the year. Seasons of snow and bad weather force students, who would otherwise ride their motorcycles to school, to find other methods to reach their classes on time.

Students held a protest to rally against both the cost of the permit and its limited usage. Before August 1, 2011 motorcycle riders were not charged at all for parking, provided they parked in designated spaces on campus. While a year-long permit for a car at WVU currently stands at $348, parking a motorcycle takes up less space and tends to cause less of a strain on maintenance.

Due to the protests, the Director of Transportation of the University, Hugh Kierig, agreed to cut the permit fee for motorcyclists to $100 a year. He has also offered to issue a $62 refund to anyone who had already purchased a permit. Per the Daily Athenium, WVUs student newspaper, the pass also now allows motorcyclists to park at both campuses. This just goes to show that sometimes the loudest pipes are heard above the traffic.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=66 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=66 Wed, 31 Aug 2011 08:03:35 +0000 West Valley Memorial Rider Raises Money for Fallen Police Officers - Tori I.

Image Courtesy of the West Valley Memorial Ride Website

Saturday August 27, 2011 marked the 4th annual West Valley Memorial Ride. While I know some folks are grumbling that we here in Southern California known nothing about real winter, we do know something about motorcycles. Weve had our share of winter rain storms, mild flooding and just plain miserable conditions.

However, for those of you who live back East or put your bike into Winter storage, now is the time to get you bike out and ride. Here are a few safety tips and suggestions for how to get your bike in riding shape:

1. Check your battery terminals and reinstall your battery.
2. Check your valves and adjust them when they are cold.
3. Check your oil levels. If you didnt replace the oil before you stored your bike for winter, do this now and check your filters.
4. Check the fuel. Many people leave the fuel tank full to prevent rust. If you didnt use a fuel stabilizer, its most likely stratified. If it has, empty the tank completely.
5. Check your cables and make sure to lube them.
6. Check your tire pressure and see if they are worn and need to be replaced.
7. Check your suspension and steering. If it needs to be tightened or attended to, do it now.
8. Check the function of your lights. If they dont work, replace them now.
9. Check your brake fluid and make sure that your brakes and pads are in good condition.
10. Clean your bike. Remove any corrosion and apply a new coat of wax or protectant to help keep your bike in good shape for the season.
11. Go slow. After a while of not riding, you will be rusty. We recommend taking a refresher course and just taking it slow at first.

If its still cold where you are, we recommend wearing heated gear and watching the road for ice or slush.

Above all, get out there and have a fun safe ride. Its nice to get out after being cooped up in the cold for so long.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=46 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=46 Fri, 25 Mar 2011 08:11:57 +0000 Happy St. Patrick's Day from Barons Custom and LA Choppers - Tori I. Watch out for GA Checkpoints - from The Motorcycle Riders Foundation Georgia Department of Public Safety Announces Details of Motorcycle Only Roadside Checkpoints

04 March 2011

Contact: Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs

The Motorcycle Riders Foundation reports that the Georgia Department of Public Safety (GA DPS) has announced some of the details of the motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints. The details include some the reasoning, time frame and locations of the checkpoints.

Lt. Colonel Mark McDonough, GA DPS Deputy Commissioner, explained that the reason for the checkpoints is the rise continued of motorcycle fatalities in the State of GA from 2005-2008. There were 167 motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2008.

McDonough did acknowledge the State's education campaign in 2009, which focused solely on raising awareness of motorcyclists with all other road users. The campaign included safety presentations to school, church, civic groups and media outreach by State Troopers. The GA DPS credits the campaign with a 35 percent decrease in motorcyclists fatalities over the previous year. The Department called this historic decrease a "good first step".

The next step, according to GA DPS, is the motorcycle-only roadside checkpoints.

The first of these checkpoints will be conducted Wednesday, March 9th, 2011 from 8AM-5PM along Interstate 75 at the southbound commercial vehicle inspection station in Monroe County. During the same time frame an additional checkpoint will be established at the southbound commercial vehicle inspection station along I-95 in Chatham County, north of Savannah.

The checkpoints will check for proper licensing, DOT helmets, alcohol usage, valid tags, as well the general operating condition of the motorcycle.

Lt. Col. McDonough claims that for the average operator with the proper license and equipment the delay should take about one minute.

Additional checkpoints will be conducted in the spring and fall of 2011. Checkpoints are funded into 2012 as well.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=41 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=41 Fri, 04 Mar 2011 07:53:21 +0000 Moving on Up - Tori I. These particular models have a security system kit installed as an accessory.

The problem is a part called the Body Control Module or BCM. Some models may not have had this part sealed properly, leading to water seeping into the case and wrecking havoc with electronics. This can cause the engine to stall unexpectedly. Stalling, as we all know, can lead to an accident.

Harley-Davidson is also recalling 805 of the security accessory kits that it sold separately for use on the Softail model. Owners will be notified of the potential problem and the BCM will be replaced for free. Owners can contact Harley-Davidson at 414-343-4056. Robert L. Bobby Bostic was arrested Tuesday, accused of shooting to death Carlton Richmond nearly 30 years ago. The shooting occurred during a party on June 25, 1982 in a garage at 811 Oakwood in Round Lake Beach. The location was used as a clubhouse for the motorcycle club The Wheelmen, which both men belonged to. The club is now defunct. A few witnesses came forward regarding a discussion that may have lead to the shooting, but no charges were ever actually filed.

Bostic was arrested without incident and charged with one count of first-degree murder. The accused is now 70 years-old. He will face up to 60 years in prison if convicted. Witnesses were originally reluctant to talk about the shooting to police investigators, and the case was considered "cold" until recently.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=37 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=37 Fri, 28 Jan 2011 03:50:56 +0000 Motorcycle Club Ex-officers Sentenced - Tori I. Thomas Taz Benvie and Aref Steve Nagi were sentenced for their involvement in various crimes as former heads of the Maine chapter of the Outlaws and Highwaymen Motorcycle clubs, respectively.

Benvie is accused of green-lighting the shooting of a Hells Angel member in 2009. The shooting was said to be payback for a fight between gang members in Connecticut. He has been sentenced to serve 15 months in prison for his involvement. Benvie was also sentenced earlier this month in a Richmond, Virginia courtroom for one charge of racketeering. Three other charged of racketeering were previously dismissed. Taz Benvie is only one of 27 Outlaw members charged in a federal indictment from June 2010. His fellow club member, Thomas Tomcat Mayne was killed in a shootout with agents of the ATF during the initial roundup of suspects in 2010.

Meanwhile, in the Eastern District of Michigan, former Vice President of the Highwaymen Motorcycle Club Steve Nagi was sentenced to 37 years in prison. Nagi is the first to be sentenced of 6 Highwaymen members. He was charged with multiple felonies including racketeering, and has been rumored to be the go-to guy who fixed problems for members of the club. Testimony of Nagis violence, where drugs and alcohol played a factor, still haunt jury members. The trials continue for the Highwaymen, with the government continuing with the prosecution of more than 80 alleged Highwaymen club members and those who associated with them.

The sentencing marks what seems to be an increased interest in stopping criminal activity from Motorcycle Clubs across the country.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=36 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=36 Mon, 24 Jan 2011 03:50:39 +0000 Jarrad's Law Brings New Restrictions To Underage Bikers in California - Tori I. Unlike the recently passed exhaust law, sometimes a law in California comes around that makes sense.

In August of 2007, Jarrad Cole was learning to ride a motorcycle before heading off to college. At 18, he had undergone exactly what the state of California required: he took a written test and received a permit. In California there was no restriction for what type of bike he could ride.

As his father went to grab some training materials, he heard the motorcycle rev and a loud bang. To his horror, Jarrad had run into a retaining wall and severed his aorta. The teenager died quickly.

Sawyer Cole, Jarrads brother, and Michael Kelleher, a friend, decided that the best way to honor Jarrads memory was to do something positive with the tragic events. The two helped to write and support Jarrads Law.

The law went into effect on January 2011. If you are under 21 in the state of California and looking to get your motorcycle permit you now have a few more requirements. The law requires 15 hours of formal training in edition to the original written test to acquire an instructional permit. The new California law also requires that those bikers under 21 also hold their permit for at least six months before applying for an actual motorcycle license. Oregon has taken this to a bit higher level and plan to require all those under 31 to complete the formal training. Many parts of Europe have similar requirements in place already.

The new law is by no means a cure-all, and those under 21 are not the only ones who should consider taking a class or even just a refresher course. The hope of the Cole family is that the new law will help prevent tragedies like the one they suffered in 2007.

Image Courtesy of the Orange County Register

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=35 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=35 Tue, 18 Jan 2011 05:08:21 +0000 Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day from Barons and LA Choppers - Tori I

Happy Holiday Weekend!

Witnesses report that the impatient Civic driver was traveling at speeds of 90-100 miles per hour and attempted to change lanes to get out from behind the group of motorcyclists. Nice welds, perfect chrome, I could not have asked for more, especially at the price they sell these for.

I opted for the medium Club Bar as they fit with the stock cables and still give a nice amount of rise and pullback to create a comfortable position for my arms on the bike.

I always internally wire my bars for a sleek look, and this was one of the simplest wiring jobs I have ever done. The curves in the bars made for a 30 second wire pull with each set of controls. Really!

Once I had everything ready to go I fired up my ride and sat and stared in wonder at the beautiful look of these Club Bars. I have never seen any other bars that look like this! My bike is now unique! I hopped on board and headed out for a nice canyon carving experience.

The seating position is perfect for me. No need to lean forward to reach the bars and my arms had a comfortable bend in them so there was no need to lean forward to counter steer and turn the bike.

After a few hours of riding my favorite canyons the Malibu and Calabasas area I stopped for a break. Even if you are the greatest rider of all time, there are still outside influences that can cause a crash. The mom fiddling with her kids in the minivan, the guy on his cell phone who doesnt look before he crosses three lane, the mattress that falls out of a truck right in front of you; these things happen.

So in a crash, does a helmet make that much of a difference? According to several studies it does. In 2003, the state of Pennsylvania repealed its universal motorcycle helmet law. This allowed those over 21 who had taken a safety course to ride without a helmet. What happened? The helmet use among riders in Pennsylvania dropped from 82% to only 58%. In turn, the head injury death rate increased by 32%. Interestingly enough, the non-head injury death rate did not change.

Opponents to mandatory helmet laws claim that a helmet restricts vision and decreases awareness of the surrounding environment. Many claim it makes it difficult for them to see to the side or hear a horn. While this may be true, no study to date has shown this to increase the rate of accidents. Instead, according to the Safe Cycle-Motorcycling Safety Foundation, wearing a properly fitted helmet can actually improve the riders ability to hear other sounds because it streamlines the head and ear to reduce wind noise.

The other claim is that opponents fear that motorcycle helmets may increase the risk of cervical spine injury (the portion of the spine in the neck). Controlled studies have shown no increased risk of cervical spine injury for helmet wearers in an accident. That being said, a crash that will destroy your helmet will usually have already destroyed your body.

Another plus side to helmets; they keep dirt, dust and bugs out of your face. Full face helmets help to keep that little gnat out of your teeth when youre going 60 miles an hour.

Helmets are designed to take the impact of a crash; your skull is not. So how does a helmet work? While in the even of a crash your head stops suddenly, that squishy jell-o like substance known as your brain keeps traveling forward. Your helmet is usually made of a tough rigid outer shell, a crushable inner liner, a chin strap and an inner padding to make the whole thing a bit more comfortable.

The purpose of the outer liner is to take the initial impact and to prevent debris or other objects from penetrating the helmet. The outer coating acts as a skull for your skull.

The crushable inner liner is usually made of expanded polystyrene (EPS) to absorb the energy of the impact by collapsing inward on itself and taking away that extra force from your brain. During a crash, the foam inside begins to crush and break up. This causes speeds of the head and brain to slow down. The strap, though obvious, holds the helmet in place during the crash.

The average helmet is good for one crash, or for approximately five years, before it needs to be replaced. Over time things like weather, chemical exposure and heat can cause the helmet to weaken and dropping it can cause damage to the safety features of the helmet.

What should you look for when buying a helmet:

DOT Certification. You should always make sure there is a DOT (US Department of Transportation) sticker on the back of the helmet. This means that the helmet meets US safety standards. If the helmet is not DOT approved, chances are it isnt going to do anything for your skull when you go down.
Make sure that the helmet is the right size. It should feel snug and stable, even when you shake your head. Make sure that it grips your cheeks, jaw and the sides and top of your head. Always try on the helmet before you buy it so that you know it fits.
Make sure your helmet is comfortable. Nothing puts a damper on a good ride like an uncomfortable helmet. Now some may argue that a helmet by nature is not comfortable; its way more comfortable than having to relearn to walk or speak.

3 Types of Helmets

A full-face helmet- This type of helmet covers the whole head as well as the base of the skull with a protective section to protect the jaw. This is the safest type of helmet in an accident. We recommend this type of helmet for all serious riders.
Modular/flip up helmet- This type of helmet is a cross between an open faced helmet and a full face helmet.
Open face helmet- this type of helmet has a back part that covers the back of the skull, but does not have a chin bar, and often lacks a face shield. If you go sliding down the freeway on your face, this helmet will not do you a whole lot of good. A study at UCLA in 2003 found that facial fractures are more likely to occur with this kind of helmet. Facial injuries can be just as painful and traumatic to your brain. Many of these are listed as Novelty Helmets; this means that the helmet is not designed to protect you, but rather for a particular look instead.

Some food for thought:

Between 1984 and 2006, the National Highway Transit Safety Administration estimates that helmets have saved over 19,000 lives.
In 1998 alone, 500 motorcyclists lives were saved due to helmet usage; 307 could have been saved. In 1998, 46% of fatally injured motorcycle drivers were not wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
Head injury is a leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes.
Whether you like it or not, helmets save lives.

Image Courtesy of the Jeff Dean article "Why Wear A Full-Face Helmet."

Thanks to the following Websites for their assistance in writing this article:

Helmet Performance: Blowing The Lid Off
Michigan State Police Website
WebbikeWorld

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=16 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=16 Thu, 21 Oct 2010 04:19:46 +0000 Cops In Pink Tutus Prepare To Travel the California Coast - Tori I.

No, you didnt read that wrong. Amidst the cries of Thank God for Dead Soldiers from the now infamous Westboro Baptist Church, a group of bikers stood their ground to protect and honor the memory of fallen Navy Seal Lt. Brendan Looney (29). Lt. Looney was one of 9 service members to be killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on September 21, 2010.

While the Monday October 4th service was closed off to the news media at the request of the family, three members of the Westboro Church arrived concealing their signs in a large bag. The group began to place their signs in a sectioned off area. The signs read things such as God Is Your Enemy America is Doomed Dont Worship the Dead and Fags Doom Nation.

Just before the funeral procession was to make its way past the disrespectful protest signs, a group of local Bikers thundered in to the rescue. Many of the riders were veterans themselves and rode with pride, brandishing large American flags waving in the wind. According to the Washington Post, the riders then preceded to rev their engines to ear splitting levels to drown out the protest cries of the Westboro Baptist Church, giving way to thumbs-ups and the grateful smiles as the occupants of the cars in the funeral procession passed by the display.

The Westboro Baptist Church is currently the subject of a Supreme Court case to determine whether their outlandish and disrespectful protests of soldier funerals are protected by first amendment rights. Clyde Fleming, a 62 year old biker in the counter-protest was later quoted as saying that while the church had the right to protest, the bikers have a right to block their noise and their rhetoric.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=12 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=12 Tue, 05 Oct 2010 02:48:42 +0000 California's Governor Signs the Motorcycle Anti-Tampering Act Into Law - Tori I. On Tuesday September 28, 2010, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger shocked motorcyclists by signing State Bill 435 into law. The bill has become known as the Motorcycle Anti-Tampering Act. The law, which targets motorcyclists who have installed custom aftermarket exhausts to replace stock emission control devices, is designed to reduce emissions and quiet down loud pipes.

The law makes it a fineable offense to operate a motorcycle manufactured after January 1, 2013 that does not meet federal noise-emission control standards. The police will be looking for a label on exhausts from the Environmental Protection Agency that states the bike meets legal standards. The problem with this is that the labels are often hard to locate on current exhaust systems. The first time violation is $100 and additional violations can go up to $250. First offence tickets can be voided if the rider makes the proper changes to their equipment.

While supporters of the bill claim that it will quiet the streets and improve air quality, bikers wonder. Californias recent law enacted to end sending text messages while driving has just been reported to be largely ineffectual. After all, while California has more than 10% of the countries registered motorcycles, the riders are still far out numbered by cars and trucks that often violate noise and pollution restrictions. It is a shame to see a Governor so often photographed on his personal motorcycles sign a bill that limits the freedom of motorcycle riders in California.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=11 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=11 Thu, 30 Sep 2010 03:40:56 +0000 Two Days Decide the Fate of SB 435 - Tori I. Without them, your bike is the equivalent of an overpriced boat anchor. With that in mind, its easy to understand the importance of quality when youre replacing the stock handlebars on your motorcycle.

Think of all the pressure on your bars. There is the weight of the bars themselves, followed by the weight of your arms pulling down on them. Add into this combination the constant bumps and readjusts your bike goes through while youre out riding. Now imagine you have to stop suddenly. Youre pulling all your weight down, plus the weight of the bike itself and you to stop. When you are riding, you are constantly exerting pressure with the weight of the wind on you.

So how do you successfully change up your bars to the ape hangers or beach bar of your dreams without breaking them in the process?

One way to prevent breakage is to use the proper risers and top clamps for your handlebar. A larger mounting surface distributes the stress across more surface area. The higher your bars, the more force you exert when you use the bars. A one piece top clamp helps evenly distribute the force exerted on the bar through out the clamping area. This solid piece supports the bars, making them less likely to snap in cases of extreme force. A one piece top clamp is stock on all models of Harley-Davidson except touring bikes. If you have a touring bike with 1.25 handlebars, we make a specific one piece top clamp/riser LA-7420-00 so you can throw apes on safely should you wish to make that modification. Handlebars go into the risers and are sandwiched between risers and a top clamp.

Under no circumstances should you use the skinny moto style risers with our handlebars. Skinny risers will exert extreme amounts of pressure on a small area, weakening the metal and creating a sheer point. A thicker riser will help support your bar. We have thickened our handlebars in the middle to prevent breakage, but constant pressure from inadequate risers may still cause weakness overtime.

Take good care of your bike. When you want to change the look of your bike, make sure to use correct, good quality parts. And as always, Ride A Nice Day.

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=7 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=7 Mon, 13 Sep 2010 06:19:50 +0000 Cannonball Endurance Run - Tori I. What do you get when you combine pre-1916 vintage motorcycles and some 3,294 miles cross country? You get the 2010 Cannonball Endurance Run.

From September 10-26th 2010 a wealth of classic motorcycles will be seen riding across the United States. Starting in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina and finishing in Santa Monica, California, the two week endurance run is set to begin. The ride is planned for 17 days; 16 days of road travel and one day to rest up in Hot springs, Arkansas.

These motorcycles are usually reserved in special collections, museums and displayed in dealerships. For two weeks, they will be seen thundering down the road as they did almost 100 years ago.

One of the chief concerns in this race is the wear and tear on these older motorcycles. All riding will we done in the daylight hours on roads, with special care to avoid interstates. Most riders are not expected to complete the entire run.

The ride is named for Erwin Cannonball Baker, know for setting nearly 150 driving records up until the 1930s. He set his first record riding coast to coast in 11 days on an Indian Motorcycle in 1914.

For more information, visit www.motorcyclecannonball.com

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=6 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=6 Thu, 09 Sep 2010 06:20:37 +0000 Need Help Finding the Right Cables For Your Motorcycle? - Tori I. The Golden State may not be so golden if the California Senate has its way. Anyone who has lived in California, or even visited for that dream vacation, knows that motorcycles are not the loudest things to run through the streets. However, as recent Senate Bill 435 has proven, they seem to be the easiest target.

Senate Bill 435 is headed for Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggers desk after passing the California State Assembly. And dont think just because the Governor rides a motorcycle that it wont pass.

Senator Fran Pavley, of the wealthy Santa Monica district, is the author of the bill. In a news release issued on Monday, Pavley says that, noise pollution caused by illegally modified motorcycle exhausts is a quality of life issue across the state.

But, what about the quality of life for motorcyclists? Have you changed your exhaust? While the 27 year old-current law states that only drivers who are a) not equipped with a muffler, b) emitting an offensive, harsh or excessive sound, or c) have a clearly defective exhaust system should be cited.

The new bill targets people who will remove their stock exhausts on any motorcycle manufactured after January 1, 2013. Many current motorcyclists have changed their stock exhausts in an attempt to get distracted motorists to notice them.

Website after website has sprung up in an attempt to increase drivers awareness of motorcyclist around them. A 2010 campaign in California even lit freeway signs with messages asking drivers to look twice for motorcyclists. However, in a world where cell phones, pets, screaming children and other distractions still exist, drivers are still not paying attention. The loud rumble of a motorcycles exhaust acts as a warning of look out, Im over here.

So how will the cops know if youre in compliance? A sticker. Thats right; an EPA sticker. Herein we find the biggest problem. EPA stickers are hard to locate. So even if you havent changed your exhaust, if youre pulled over the officer has to find the EPA sticker on your bike to make sure you are legal. If the officer cannot find the sticker, you will be issued a fix-it ticket in an amount from 50-100$. Additional offenses may result in fines of 100-250$.

Western State Representative of the American Motorcycle Association, Nick Harris said it best: "This proposed law could lead to a flurry of tickets for motorcyclists who have legal exhaust systems on their machines with EPA labels that can't be easily seen. It's unreasonable to expect a law enforcement officer to easily locate an EPA label, and it's simply unfair to expect a motorcycle owner to partially dismantle an exhaust system alongside the road to prove the label exists.

The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) and the American Motorcycle Association have offered their own solutions to the problem. This solution involves the J2825 standard test, which has been called a fair, practical, and economical enforcement tool by Pamela Arnette, MIC Vice President. J2825 is a stationary sound test with specifications for sound meters to be used.

So, Ms. Pavley. While the noise may be a quality of life issue to some, it is a matter of life and death to others.

Want to speak out about the possible new law:

Write to:
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: 916-445-2841
Fax: 916-558-3160

Or email the office of the Governor at http://gov.ca.gov/interact#email

For more information on SAE J2825 visit http://www.cyclepedia.com/sae-j2825-standard

http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=4 http://www.baronscustom.com/blog/index.html?archive=4 Fri, 03 Sep 2010 05:02:20 +0000 Save 15% Off with Barons Custom Accessories and LA Choppers for Labor Day - Tori I. Is Harley-Davidson leaving Wisconsin? The motorcycle icon has left the decision up to their 1800 Union employees. Unless an agreement can be reached regarding cost cutting measures, the manufacturing work done in Wisconsin may be transferred to Kansas City or be shifted to a remaining plant in York, PA.

The decision is a difficult one for Harley-Davidson, as well as the United Steel Workers of America and the International Associations of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Both the unions and Harley-Davidson are working to make concessions to cut costs and protect workers in the process. In the end it comes down to what is the most cost effective for production.

Harley-Davidson reports they will make their final decision near the end of September, after a union-wide vote.
